Council has obtained a grant under the Green Industries SA Kerbside Performance Plus Food Waste Incentive program which assists councils to implement sustainable and efficient food organics recycling systems and move closer to achieving targets within the South Australia's Waste Strategy 2015-2020.

Last year Council engaged KESAB Environmental Solutions to conduct a kerbside bin audit which revealed that 47% of waste found in general (red lid) bins was actually organic material which could be more effectively disposed of through a green organics (green lid) bin.

By diverting just a portion (20%) of this waste to the appropriate stream Council could save around $45,000 a year on the landfill levy (based on a $70 per tonne levy). In the long term such significant savings could then be passed on to rate payers.

To assist in making this waste behaviour shift Council are proposing to mandate the green organic waste service within the townships it currently operates in with an annual charge (currently $53) to be added to rates notices.
